I have decided to move on from Microsoft and Infusion. I have had a great time with Multimap, then Microsoft (and Infusion), over the last two years and learned a load, but it is time to make a geographical and company move.

I am moving my base to Innsbruck (to spend more time in the mountains and learn some decent German), setting up a consultancy and I will be working with Axon Active among others (who are based in Luzern)

So who are Axon Active?

Axon Active provide ‘Decision Support’ services for organisations. They do this by supplying detailed socioeconomic data, undertaking process design and providing sophisticated modelling/analysis. This includes developing applications that allow organisations to monitor their business and model scenarios themselves. All of this is tied together by looking at problems from a spatial viewpoint (they have a long history in the GI business). In a sense it is ‘real’ GIS…

More blogging is to follow on what this means in reality and I will be talking about some examples at AGI Geocommunity and the AGI North event.

I am working with Axon Active on International Technical Sales, so I will still have plenty of travel.

Oh, and Axon Active have have a cool HQ in a ‘castle’ overlooking Luzern:

I like mixing my technologies and always try to use best-of-breed (and things that are free!) I started using wordpress.com for hosting (when I am brave I will move to my own hosting of wordpress) but was not quite so happy with the online editing tools. The other day I was talking blogging with Chris Pendleton and he recommenced using Windows Live Writer as an offline editing tool. It works really well with wordpress.com and the editing tools are excellent. So now I can blog on the plane and then upload it all when convenient…

Some of my favourite Windows Live Writer features so far are:

A rich editing Word like environment with decent spell checking (essential for me!)

Ability to save drafts online, push the drafts to wordpress.com or publish straight away.

Multiple preview views

Great plugin-ins like “Insert Code Snippet” and “Insert Picassa Link“

And best of all the standard “Insert Map” tool. Which lets you do this:

Multimap Office

And even this:

Leicester Square, London

Cool or what!?

OK well I was always a rather late developer. For example I was one of ones that waited a while before doing that learning to walk thing. My excuse has always been that there is no point doing something new until you need it. Why walk when crawling was getting me where I needed to go?

Well perhaps it is the same with blogging, a late starter again… Well I’ve always put it off as I wanted to make sure I had enough useful stuff to blog about consistently. Well I think now is the time, so off we go…

Besides, I now find using my feet quite useful:
