			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I love capturing mountain scenes with clouds in my normal photography. Interesting clouds can really add to a composition:</p>
<p><img class="pie-img" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_u5Oi1CVvuiQ/TIfYxJSXi-I/AAAAAAAAIMA/c6lUwYm-thk/P1240956.JPG?imgmax=576" alt="P1240956.JPG" width="432" height="576" /><img style="margin: 10px 10px 10px 10px;" alt="" /></p>
<p>Or frame a scene:</p>
<p><img class="pie-img" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_u5Oi1CVvuiQ/TIfYrPAc6RI/AAAAAAAAIL8/VSBk_mev6YE/P1270908_tonemapped.jpg?imgmax=576" alt="P1270908_tonemapped.jpg" width="576" height="429" /><img style="margin: 10px 10px 10px 10px;" alt="" /></p>
<p>Or with a bit of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging">HDR</a> trickery create a dramatic atmosphere:</p>
<p><img class="pie-img" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_u5Oi1CVvuiQ/TIfYk2MvGqI/AAAAAAAAIL4/bZKohAMYExo/P1010971_tonemapped.jpg?imgmax=576" alt="P1010971_tonemapped.jpg" width="431" height="576" /><img style="margin: 10px 10px 10px 10px;" alt="" /></p>
<p>So when I want to create GigaPans of mountain scenes I want to include clouds as well and use them to enhance the atmosphere.  Without clouds, or something different, big mountain panoramas can feel very &#8216;flat&#8217;. The big problem is that clouds move (often fast in the mountains). That may be OK for normal photography, but things that move can create a mess in Gigapans as they no longer match in overlapping photographs. This is normally experienced as the problem of moving people in GigaPans. However moving clouds can create bigger problems!</p>
<p>Here is one of my early GigaPans illustrating what can happen:<br />
<iframe src="http://www.gigapan.org/media/gigapans/47464/options/nosnapshots/iframe/flash.html" frameborder="0" height="260" scrolling="no" width="100%"></iframe></p>
<p>Crazy stripes! In this scene the moving clouds created havoc with the stitching. However it has created an unintentionally interesting image! </p>
<p>One tip from <a href="http://gigapan.org/profiles/7170/">johnf</a> is:</p>
<blockquote><p>Try a different gigapan path, going by rows rather than columns to minimize the drift of the clouds by rows. I&#8217;ve found this to be the best solution&#8230; </p></blockquote>
<p>I have found this does work and if the clouds do not drift too much you can capture scenes like this relatively well:<br />
<iframe src="http://www.gigapan.org/media/gigapans/58592/options/nosnapshots/iframe/flash.html" frameborder="0" height="260" scrolling="no" width="100%"></iframe></p>
<p>But you need several failures, a bit of patience and a lot of luck to get good cloud scenes in GigaPans.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have always been rather amused by the rather pretentious and lazy concept of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Found_art">Found Art</a>.  Well now I have caught myself doing it.</p>
<p>On my iGoogle page I always have the <a href="http://www.tirol.gv.at/themen/umwelt/luft/livebilder/innsbruck-patscherkofel#">webcam</a> image from the top of the <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patscherkofel">Patscherkofel</a> mountain as it is a great way to check the weather.  For example, when there is cloud in the Inn Valley, I can check the webcam to see if the peaks are free of the cloud and it is worth heading up into the mountains. </p>
<p>As I look at the webcam several times a day, I started to get fascinated by the changing scene while the composition remains completely fixed.  So I decided to start &#8216;collecting&#8217; snapshots from the webcam whenever I saw something interesting. These are my &#8216;found images&#8217;!</p>
<p>So here they are:</p>
<p><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="600" height="400" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&#038;hl=en_GB&#038;feat=flashalbum&#038;RGB=0x000000&#038;feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Ftimlwarr%2Falbumid%2F5455611536027983697%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26authkey%3DGv1sRgCMTuq5D1t6bPLQ%26hl%3Den_GB" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As I now spend so much time in Innsbruck, I thought I better give skiing a go.&nbsp; Growing up in Africa meant I had never tried it before.&nbsp; To be honest I was rather hoping I would hate it and would then save a lot of money as a result.&nbsp; Unfortunately I am rather enjoying it and spend happy hours falling over in the snow.</p>
<p>I thought it might be fun to keep a record of all the slopes I ski and, as I had not played around with Virtual Earth Collections, I thought I would try using these. </p>
<p>So basically I created my collection in <a href="http://maps.live.com/">maps.live.com</a>, digitising a line for each route.&nbsp; Once created, these are hosted for me under my LiveID:</p>
<p><a href="http://blog.timwarr.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/image5.png"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" border="0" alt="image" src="http://blog.timwarr.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/image-thumb3.png" width="184" height="244"></a> </p>
<p>If you go to this <a href="http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&amp;FORM=LMLTCC&amp;cp=47.207447~11.448884&amp;style=h&amp;lvl=19&amp;tilt=-17.2093705157566&amp;dir=71.6312939765598&amp;alt=1988.87176209129&amp;cam=47.207125~11.447462&amp;scene=-1&amp;phx=0&amp;phy=0&amp;phscl=1&amp;encType=1&amp;cid=732F02805B635365!182&amp;tour=1">link</a> you can explore my ski route collection it in all it&#8217;s 3D glory!</p>
<p>What is cool is that you can create your own videos of a 3D tour really easily in VE.&nbsp; So here it is:</p>
<p>
<div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:73b88267-a7a2-4c4a-bf92-93fcc26f56a8" class="wlWriterSmartContent">
<div id="93f47c12-b53a-4f5e-b845-29200c3151e8" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;">
<div><a href="http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?vid=15b61b71-68b8-4952-aa00-9e1d5b389318&amp;from=writer" target="_new"><img src="http://blog.timwarr.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/video78c9dfc33d42.jpg" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('93f47c12-b53a-4f5e-b845-29200c3151e8'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = &quot;&lt;div&gt;&lt;embed src=\&quot;http://images.video.msn.com/flash/soapbox1_1.swf\&quot; quality=\&quot;high\&quot; width=\&quot;432\&quot; height=\&quot;364\&quot; wmode=\&quot;transparent\&quot; type=\&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash\&quot; pluginspage=\&quot;http://macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer\&quot; flashvars=\&quot;c=v&amp;v=15b61b71-68b8-4952-aa00-9e1d5b389318&amp;from=writer\&quot; &gt;&lt;\/embed&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;&quot;;" alt=""></a></div>
</div>
</div>
<p>I love the way this gives a rich 3D view of the slopes (which are not very steep yet!).&nbsp; Ok, so there is no snow, but you can&#8217;t have everything!</p>
<p>Oh, and for some schadenfreude see:</p>
<div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:8cfe4156-4c86-4b1b-b3ab-25bd6ae0f23c" class="wlWriterSmartContent">
<div id="83ea4414-9413-48ab-832d-5b3059706fc4" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;">
<div><a href="http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?vid=73e765ed-520a-40b6-b52f-c460bd9f1ea9&amp;from=writer" target="_new"><img src="http://blog.timwarr.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/videof97958059386.jpg" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('83ea4414-9413-48ab-832d-5b3059706fc4'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = &quot;&lt;div&gt;&lt;embed src=\&quot;http://images.video.msn.com/flash/soapbox1_1.swf\&quot; quality=\&quot;high\&quot; width=\&quot;432\&quot; height=\&quot;364\&quot; wmode=\&quot;transparent\&quot; type=\&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash\&quot; pluginspage=\&quot;http://macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer\&quot; flashvars=\&quot;c=v&amp;v=73e765ed-520a-40b6-b52f-c460bd9f1ea9&amp;from=writer\&quot; &gt;&lt;\/embed&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;&quot;;" alt=""></a></div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.stubaitalbahn.at/"><img src="http://www.stubaitalbahn.at/Bilder/stb.jpg" alt="" width="168" height="240" /></a></p>
<p>One of my favourite trips in <a href="http://www.multimap.com/s/u6W49ANw">Innsbruck</a> is a trip on the <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stubaitalbahn">Stubaitalbahn</a>.  This is a tram that winds it way out of Innsbruck and into the alpine <a href="http://www.multimap.com/s/DU7RR4zq">Stubaital</a> valley and is also a great way of getting into the mountains for some fantastic walking.  It is quite intriguing how the tram winds its way around the mountainsides to make it up to the village of <a href="http://www.multimap.com/s/DU7RR4zq">Fulpmes</a>.  So I thought it would be interesting to create a VE mashup to see the route on a map and most importantly in 3D.</p>
<p>So <a href="http://rc.multimap.com/demos/timw_test/map_crunch/stb/SamplePage.html">here is my mashup</a>.</p>
<p>Although it looks good in 2D:</p>
<p><a href="http://release.multimap.com/demos/timw_test/map_crunch/stb/SamplePage.html"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" src="http://timwarr.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/image4.png" border="0" alt="image" width="450" height="353" /></a></p>
<p>It only really comes to life when you switch to the 3D view:</p>
<p><a href="http://release.multimap.com/demos/timw_test/map_crunch/stb/SamplePage.html"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" src="http://timwarr.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/image5.png" border="0" alt="image" width="450" height="268" /></a></p>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>So how did I make this?</strong></p>
<p>Well I used <a href="http://research.microsoft.com/mapcruncher/">MapCruncher</a>.  MapCruncher is a great free Microsoft tool to take a map image, georectify it and then chop into automatically into tiles which match the Virtual Earth tile specification.  It then generates a sample mashup application for you which you can easily modify to you needs.</p>
<p>Essentially I found a map of the line <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bild:Stb_netzplan.gif&amp;filetimestamp=20070211163908">here</a> and imported it into MapCruncher.  I then had to match points that correspond on your map and the Virtual Earth mapping.  I this case I set about 20 points along the track, at the edge of bends or stations:</p>
<p><a href="http://timwarr.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/image1.png"></a></p>
<p><a href="http://timwarr.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/image2.png"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" src="http://timwarr.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/image-thumb2.png" border="0" alt="image" width="450" height="316" /></a></p>
<p>Next I set the white areas of the map image as transparent. Then all I had to do is render the tiles using the renderer:</p>
<p><a href="http://timwarr.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/image3.png"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" src="http://timwarr.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/image-thumb3.png" border="0" alt="image" width="450" height="293" /></a></p>
<p>Simple!</p>
<p>For more help there are resources on the <a href="http://research.microsoft.com/mapcruncher/">MapCruncher site</a> and this <a href="http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?vid=66a1094c-8490-4e30-b353-88332ba2fe47">video</a> gives a good overview.</p>
<p>Now I only need to get some <a href="http://timwarr.wordpress.com/2008/08/22/my-1st-photosynths-on-a-map/">photosynths</a> done of the trams and I&#8217;m a fully fledged tram-spotter&#8230;.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://timwarr.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/p1060062-1.jpg"><img style="border-width:0;" border="0" alt="P1060062-1" src="http://timwarr.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/p1060062-1-thumb.jpg" width="360" height="480"></a> </p>
<p>The Telegraph newspaper has a good <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2639307/Map-reading-skills-dying-out-due-to-internet-and-satnavs.html">story</a> suggesting traditional map reading is a dying skill due to the increasing use of web mapping and sat navs.&nbsp; I was impressed with how well researched it was.&nbsp; </p>
<p>I spend a lot of time walking in the mountains and still feel that paper maps and magnetic compass are still the best &#8216;interface&#8217; for hiking (and I have shunned GPS so far).&nbsp; OK so call me a Luddite&#8230;&nbsp; But, navigation in urban areas is a different story where I want to use more current technologies as the environment changes faster and I want to search rich data.&nbsp; For example an Ordnance Survey Landranger map is not much use for finding deep crust pizza in London, but a mapping client on my mobile is.&nbsp; So perhaps we are entering a new urban/rural divide with new mapping/navigation technologies?&nbsp; </p>
<p>But web mapping can still cover traditional cartography too.&nbsp; What this story (and the similar <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7586789.stm">bbc story</a>) missed, was the fact that you can access &#8216;traditional&#8217; cartography on Web Mapping.&nbsp; For example on <a href="http://www.multimap.com/">multimap.com</a> you can use Ordnance Survey mapping (see this <a href="http://www.multimap.com/s/PC7cagLW">example</a>) and Bartholomew&#8217;s mapping (<a href="http://www.multimap.com/s/h4B6nDRj">see</a>).&nbsp; These will show: <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2639307/Map-reading-skills-dying-out-due-to-internet-and-satnavs.html">&#8220;&#8230;landmarks such as the Science Museum, Royal Albert Hall and the Natural History Museum, which could not be found on Google Maps.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>It also worth looking at <a title="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7587415.stm" href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7587415.stm">http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7587415.stm</a> for a good debate on this where Adrian Miles puts up a spirited defence of web mapping (and even touches on the <a href="http://www.freeourdata.org.uk/">Free Our Data debate</a>!)</p>
<p><strong>Update</strong></p>
<p>A good forum debate on the BBC site has started <a href="http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thread.jspa?forumID=5281&amp;edition=2&amp;ttl=20080829143012">here</a></p>
<p>Ed Parsons has leapt to the defence of web mapping against those old school cartographers <a href="http://www.edparsons.com/2008/09/cartography-is-dead-long-live-the-map-makers/">here</a>.&nbsp; </p>
